The bUSA Today article below points out that traditional retirement is becoming a thing of the past, because most citizens have failed to plan for it.     Traditional retirement possibly becoming a thing of the past.   It may be time to redefine retirement. A new survey of American workers from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies found that 82% of the respondents age 60 and older either are, or expect to keep working past the age of 65. Among all workers, regardless of age, 20% expect to keep on working as long as possible in their current job or a similar one. "The days of the gold-watch retirement where we have an office party and maybe some punch and cookies and never work again are more mythical than a reality,'' said Catherine Collinson, president of the retirement studies center. "Very few workers actually envision that type of retirement and many plan to keep on working part-time even after they retire. "It even raises the question is retirement the right word." By Strongbrook CEO Steve Earl   A Story About What Can Happen When You Don't Give Up   Early morning, October 5, 2013. Do or die time. A strange mix of fear and excitement clenched my gut as I stretched in the dark, gearing up for my eighth marathon. After falling short seven times in a row, I was better prepared to qualify for Boston than ever before.   I would need to run a 3:15—which would require me to beat my previous PR by more than seven minutes. I had trained like I never had before. I had my race time down to the second. Each mile was mapped. My race-fueling plan was precise. The race began. My stomach calmed as I settled into my groove. At the halfway point I was only three seconds off my projected time.   But a few miles later, I was forced to take a blasted potty break. Then, at mile twenty-two, my legs had tightened up so much that I felt my pace slowing. I knew that if I didn't do something, I would miss my goal. A debate raged in my mind. I finally stopped and stretched.   A significant part of my training for this race was mental toughening. I had prepared and used several mantras during my training. After mile twenty-four, I repeated in my mind hundreds of times, "I have more to give! I have more to give!"   But as the finish line came into view, the fear and excitement I had felt at the beginning of the race had turned to bitter disappointment. I crossed the line in 3:17:17. I was crushed, utterly defeated. Especially when I analyzed my splits and mile-by-mile results and realized that had I not made those two pit stops, I would have made it.   Although I had PR'd at the age of forty-four by nearly five minutes, I had fallen short again.   Or had I?  CLICK HERE FOR FULL STORY   Real Estate Focus   USA Today: Doubling your money: the 'rule of 72'   How long does it take to double your money? It pays to understand the math.   Everyone says you should invest because you'll grow your money, but let's back up a second and look at how it really works.   Stocks are one of many possible ways to invest your money. While the future is never guaranteed, history suggests that they have high potential returns. The long-term average return of the Standard and Poor's 500 Index is about 10% per year from 1928 to 2014. Warren Buffett several years ago, in the aftermath of the financial crisis, said that investors should expect a return of 6% to 7% a year.   Keep in mind that these are long-term averages. The market can go down in one year, and you have to wait a couple of years for things to turn around.
